How to Rid of Gingivitis

Posted on: January 11, 2014

We’ve heard of gingivitis on radio or on tv but what exactly is gingivitis and how we can avoid it?

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) is an early form of  gum disease.  While healthy gums look  light pink in color, and have a firm consistency, diseased gums are red,  tender, puffy, and bleed easily (figure 1).

Gums with gingivitis are  irritated gums.  Plaque build-up, which  in time turns into tartar (calculus), food particles, and bacteria all  contribute to gingivitis.  If gingivitis  is not treated with regular professional cleanings and daily brushing and  flossing, it can progress to cause gum disease.   Gum (also called periodontal) disease can cause loss of the bone  surrounding the teeth and in advanced stages will cause tooth loss.
While some over the counter mouth rinses, such as  Listerine reduce gingivitis, these products are by no means a replacement to daily  brushing and flossing and regular professional cleanings.  We want you to enjoy all the benefits of  healthy gums and teeth.  If it has been  more that six months since your last professional cleaning, call our office to  schedule a visit.
