Visit Our Children’s Dentist Office So Your Kids Can Learn How to Brush Their Teeth

Children's DentistAs a local children’s dentist office, we understand the importance of preventative dental care.  This involves eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, brushing and flossing, and having teeth cleaned at least twice a year.  People that follow these steps will typically avoid any major oral health problems.

The challenge is that a lot of people don’t know how to properly brush their teeth.  When you bring your kids to our office for a teeth cleaning, we can demonstrate how to they can brush and floss their teeth.  We also give them a new toothbrush so that they can get excited about using it.

Before scheduling a children’s dentist appointment, here is what you can try at home.

Buy the right tools.
Make sure that you use the right toothbrush so that your teeth can get as clean as possible. You can start by checking to see if the bristles are frayed or the toothbrush looks stained.  If so, replace it right away.  Otherwise, you can use the three-month rule of thumb.  Every three months replace your toothbrush or brush head if you use an electronic brush.

We recommend using an electronic toothbrush when possible because they tend to give a better clean.  Whether you are using a high-end expensive one or something you bought for $10 at the drug store, the bristles will move around which means you have to do less work.  They will typically move in a circular pattern and make it easier to clean your teeth.

If you are currently using a hard toothbrush, replace it with a soft one.  Hard toothbrushes can be bad for you because they can strip away the enamel that’s protecting your teeth.  They can also irritate your gums and even make them bleed.  If you tend to brush aggressively the damage can be even worse. Replace your hard brush with a soft one.  You can get similar results but without posing a risk to your enamel or gums.  If you brush throughout the day, this is especially important since your gums have an increased chance of becoming irritated anyway.

Toothpaste

When purchasing toothpaste, look for one with the ADA seal of approval. This way you know that you are purchasing a high-quality paste.  You should also use one that contains fluoride since this mineral can help to strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.  As a children’s dentist, we offer in-office fluoride treatments for our younger patients, and the paste can work to strengthen teeth in between visits.

Make sure that you also floss your teeth every day.  This can be more difficult with children but is equally important.  We can show your kids how to floss, and you can buy special flossing tools that make it more fun.  This way food and bacteria are removed from in between teeth and hard to reach places.  To keep your teeth clean, follow these steps and schedule a teeth cleaning at least twice a year.
